There are two ways to use a JBD.  A JBD can be used to boot a partition (thus booting Slackware), and a JBD can be used as a (limited, but handy) Live CD.

Often the Live CD feature can be useful in accomplishing the first purpose, booting Slackware, so the purposes overlap.
